چکیده

We reconsider the inference of spatial power spectra from angular clustering data and show how to include correlations in both the angular correlation function and the spatial power spectrum. Inclusion of the full covariance matrices loosens the constraints on large-scale structure inferred from the APM survey by over a factor of two. We present a new inversion technique based on singular value decomposition that allows one to propagate the covariance matrix on the angular correlation function through to that of the spatial power spectrum and to reconstruct smooth power spectra without underestimating the errors. Within a parameter space of the CDM shape Γ and the amplitude σ8, we find that the angular correlations in the APM survey constrain Γ to be 0.19–0.37 at 68% confidence when fit to scales larger than k = 0.2hMpc. A downturn in power at k < 0.04hMpc is significant at only 1–σ. These results are optimistic as we include only Gaussian statistical errors and neglect any boundary effects. Testing deprojection algorithms on mock angular catalogues: evidence for a break in the power spectrum

We produce mock angular catalogues from simulations with different initial power spectra to test methods that recover measures of clustering in three dimensions, such as the power spectrum, variance and higher order cumulants. We find that the statistical properties derived from the angular mock catalogues are in good agreement with the intrinsic clustering in the simulations. In particular, we...

Application of Pattern Recognition Algorithms for Clustering Power System to Voltage Control Areas and Comparison of Their Results

Finding the collapse susceptible portion of a power system is one of the purposes of voltage stability analysis. This part which is a voltage control area is called the voltage weak area. Determining the weak area and adjecent voltage control areas has special importance in the improvement of voltage stability. Designing an on-line corrective control requires the voltage weak area to be determi...

Galaxy clustering in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS): A first comparison with the APM Galaxy Survey

We compare the large scale galaxy clustering in the new SDSS early data release (EDR) with the clustering in the old APM Galaxy Survey. We make equal area projection pixel maps, similar to the ones used in the APM analysis to allow a direct comparison between the clustering in the two samples. We concentrate our analysis on an equatorial SDSS strip, 2.5 wide and 66 degrees long. Galaxies with P...

The Implications of the Large Scale Galaxy Power Spectrum for Cold Dark Matter

The APM Galaxy Survey maps the angular positions of more than one million galaxies to bJ = 20, covering a volume comparable to the forthcoming Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A numerical algorithm has been developed to estimate the power spectrum in three dimensions, using the angular clustering and a model for the redshift distribution of APM Galaxies. The power spectrum obtained is free from distor...
